Every quarter I pull the data and look at what readers are actually searching when they type ‘who owns’ into Google. The list changes — there’s a baseline of perennial favorites (Apple, McDonald’s, Meta) and a rotating set of brands that spike whenever something happens in the news (a sale, an IPO, a scandal). Here are the ten most-searched ‘who owns’ questions from January through April 2026, ranked by Google Search Console data and Ahrefs estimates.
How we built this list
Search volume estimates come from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer (US data, January–April 2026) cross-referenced with Google Trends and our own Search Console data. I’ve focused on the literal ‘who owns X’ search phrasing rather than variations like ‘who is the owner of X’ or ‘X parent company,’ though those often overlap significantly.

My take
What’s striking about this list is how stable the top is. Apple, OpenAI, Twitter/X, Tesla, McDonald’s — these questions have been the most-searched ownership queries since at least 2023, with rankings shuffling slightly based on news cycles. The biggest movers in 2026 are OpenAI (climbing as the company gets more visible) and Twitter/X (sustained interest two years after Musk’s takeover). What people are really asking with these queries varies — sometimes it’s a school-project search, sometimes it’s a deeper question about influence and accountability. Either way, this list is the most honest barometer I have of what Americans care about in the corporate-ownership space.
