Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC, known as TAQA (an Arabic word meaning energy), is one of the UAE’s largest and most important utility companies. TAQA operates across the full energy value chain including power generation, water desalination, oil and gas production, and transmission and distribution of electricity and water across Abu Dhabi. The company is also an international energy investor with assets in Europe, North America, and the broader Middle East.

Who Owns TAQA?

TAQA is overwhelmingly owned by the Abu Dhabi Power Corporation (ADPC), a government-owned entity that holds approximately 98% of TAQA’s shares. ADPC itself is owned by the Abu Dhabi government through its energy holding structure. A small float of approximately 2% is publicly traded on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX). In essence, TAQA is a state-owned enterprise that serves as Abu Dhabi’s primary electricity and water utility, with a small public listing for market transparency.

History and Background

TAQA was founded in 2005 by the Abu Dhabi government to consolidate its power and water assets and create a vehicle for international energy investment. Over the following decade, TAQA made significant overseas acquisitions including power plants and gas assets in the Netherlands, Canada, India, Morocco, and Ghana. Following a strategic review, TAQA underwent a major restructuring in 2020–2021, refocusing on its core UAE utility operations and divesting non-core international assets. It absorbed Abu Dhabi’s transmission and distribution networks (TRANSCO, ADWEA assets) to become the UAE’s dominant integrated utility.

Operations and Scale

TAQA operates power generation plants with an installed capacity of approximately 19 gigawatts (GW) and water desalination capacity of approximately 900 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) — serving virtually the entire Abu Dhabi emirate’s electricity and water needs. The company also produces oil and gas in Abu Dhabi (Saleh, Jarn Yaphour fields) and in the Netherlands and UK North Sea.
