Hindustan Motors Limited was established during the pre-Independence era (1942) at Port Okha in Gujarat. Operations were moved in 1948 to Uttarpara in district Hooghly, West Bengal, where the company began the production of the iconic Ambassador. The company is headquartered in Kolkata.

Uttam Bose, current Managing director of Hindustan Motors. He was appointed as the Managing Director in 2012 after the launch of HM’s minivan. Bose joined Hindustan Motors on April 2, 2012. A mechanical engineer and a post-graduate in management from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra. Also a qualified Lead Auditor for the Quality System from BSI, London and has completed Management Executive Programme from IIM, Ahmedabad. In addition, a certified TPM Instructor from JIPM, Japan. Further, a value engineer from the Society of Value Engineering, India. Mr. Bose has 28 years of varied experience.
In 1959, the company entered into an agreement with Universal Marion S.A., Switzerland. Later with the Marion Power Shovel company for the manufacture and sale in India. Owing to the 93M crawler-mounted diesel-powered excavators and other components. Also with the Caterpillar Tractor Company, USA, for the manufacture and sale of bulldozers and scrapers. Again, with M.A.N. Nuremberg for crane engineering products of M.A.N. design in India.

Hindustan Motors Ltd, engaged in the manufacture and sale of vehicles, spare parts of vehicles, steel products, and components. Also, engaged in trading of spare parts of vehicles. In addition, the Company operates through the Automobiles segment. The Company’s manufacturing plants include Uttarpara Division, which is located in Hooghly District, West Bengal, and Pithampur plant, which is located in Dhar District, Madhya Pradesh.
Both at the Uttarpara Division and Pithampur, Hindustan Motors manufactures Ambassadors and a one-ton payload minitruck, namely winner. The ambassador falls under the passenger car segment and the winner under the lightweight vehicle to carry loads. After 1956, Hindustan Motors classified its activities by setting up a plant at Tiruvallur, near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It mainly worked for the manufacture of earthmoving equipment such as dumpers, front-end loaders, crawler tractors, etc.
During the initial stages, the company Ambassador was equipped with integrated facilities such as a press shop, forge shop, foundry, machine shop, aggregate assembly units for engines, axles, etc, and a strong R&D wing. Ambassador cars held their state as mainstream cars until 2014 from 1957. In 1984 company started manufacturing another passenger car called Contessa. Also in the same year, they made an agreement with Japanese Isuzu Motors for manufacturing “Trooper”. Trooper, a general utility vehicle.
Hindustan motor’s automotive plant, Hind motors, the first and only integrated automobile plant in India, is located at Uttarpara factory. Furthermore, engaged in manufacturing automotive and forged components. Hindustan Motors was the top in manufacturing automobiles until the advancement of the Maruti Udyog.
