SML ISUZU, incorporated in the year 1983, former name Swaraj Vehicles. In 1984 the company entered into a joint venture with Mazda Motor Corporation, India and Sumitomo Corporation, Japan for the manufacture of light commercial vehicles.

Eventually, the company got renamed to Swaraj Mazda. The Mazda Motors, a Punjab tractor manufacturing company.

In 1985, the company’s project set up with a capacity of 5000 LCVs. Later in 1987, they introduced the indigenously developed bus. They released their second truck of the year, 1990 as Swaraj Mazda Super. And the third one in 1993. They continued there research and sooner in 1996, 4 wheel drive truck was launched.

During the initial stages, the company – Limited to manufacture Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) in the state of Punjab. It was the result of Government of India initiatives for installing the LCV unit in order to save the fuel consumption in the economy. Punjab State Industrial Development Corporation (PSIDC) obtained the letter of intent in 1981 and subsequently transferred the same in favor of the Company in 1983.

The company started with the manufacturing of 2 wheelbases and currently they yield 5 wheelbases even. In addition, the carrying base has rides from 3.0 ton to 6.0 ton in goods sector and  12 to 41 passenger seating in passenger sectors. In fact SML ISUZU, the first Indian company to release fully factory furnished buses. The company’s innovations include 4-wheel drive LCVs and CNG mini-buses.
