The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is a private, non-profit organization that was founded in 1912. The Bureau mainly focuses on advancing marketplace trust. It works to improve the trust between consumers and businesses. BBB’s more than 100 independently incorporated comprised the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and all the organizations report to the governing council.

Matthew Fehling is the President and CEO of Better Business Bureau. For the last 20 years, Matthew M. Fehling has dedicated his career to ensuring BBB remains a relevant and trusted source.

Prior to joining BBB serving the Pacific Southwest (formerly the Greater Arizona BBB) in 2004 as Executive Vice President and being appointed to President/CEO in 2006, Matthew served in several roles across the country including with the Council of Better Business Bureaus (CBBB). Leading the largest BBB in the country, his voice is heard on a national level while serving on the CBBB Board of Directors.

Matthew is a board member of Coyotes Charities and is the past president of the Valley of the Sun Kiwanis Club. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Mass Communications.

The idea to start BBB came due to the false and quackery advertisements which were very prominent n the early 1900s. Better Business Bureau has been credited with several court cases, such as the United States v. Forty Barrels and Twenty Kegs of Coca-Cola, initiated by the government against a number of organizations, including the Coca-Cola Company in 1906.

Samuel Candler Dobbs became the president of the Associated Advertising Clubs of America (now American Advertising Federation (AAF)) in In 1909, and start to make speeches on the subject.

BBB takes complaints from consumers about their marketplace experiences with businesses and they also publish positive and negative reviews of customers. BBB also provides resolution of the issues through their procedures which are established by the International Association of Better Business Bureaus and implemented by local BBBs. The disputes are generally resolved through mediation when it is appropriate and BBB may also provide ow- or no‑cost arbitration.

BBB acts as a neutral party when providing dispute resolution services. BBB usually not handled professional practice complaints like medicine and law these are referred to as associations regulating those professions.
