Timothy McCarthy, an Irish immigrant, started a lumber business in Ann Arbor, Michigan, more than 150 years ago, building barns and farmhouses out of lumber. One of the largest and most diverse commercial construction companies in the United States, the business he started in 1864 is now worth many billions of dollars.
We were primarily a family-owned business for 138 years. That all changed in 2002 when the company was owned entirely by employees. Using an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP), McCarthy gradually sold the business to its employees to preserve the company’s culture and reward dedicated employees. It took more than a decade to successfully pitch the idea to McCarthy employees. However, the program is now viewed as an enormous success by the family members and the new employee-owners. Both the privately traded stock’s price and the company’s earnings have increased. Many long-term employees who had no intention of becoming owners now hold stakes worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Today, the United States has over 11,000 ESOPs, many of which are family-owned businesses like Matthews & McCoy, a St. Louis distributor of medical books; Tucson, Arizona-based Sundt Construction; Construction firm Cianbro Corp. of Pittsfield, Massachusetts; and Acadian Ambulance & Air Med Services, a significant private ambulance service in Lafayette, Louisiana. In the 1970s, Congress introduced the concept as a means of encouraging employee ownership.

The CEO of the Company
The frontman of Mccarthy is Raymond Sedey, a charismatic and tenacious leader who greatly contributed to Mccarthy’s success. In 2000, Sedey joined McCarthy as a project engineer in the Southwest Region. After that, he held superintendent, project manager, and director positions in core operations before being elevated to vice president, of operations, in 2009, for the Las Vegas office.
Sedey was elevated to the position of executive vice president in 2012, where he was in charge of overseeing business operations in Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada. In this capacity, he was responsible for successfully positioning McCarthy as a builder of choice for complex Las Vegas Strip projects, as well as for infrastructure, aviation, commercial, healthcare, and entertainment projects.
Sedey was chosen to be the regional president of the McCarthy Texas Region in 2015. After that, in 2018, Sedey took over as Southern regional president and led efforts to combine the McCarthy Southeast Division’s and Texas Region’s operations into a new region.
