It manufactures and distributes whisky, brandy, rum, vodka, and gin under a broad portfolio of Indian and international brands, including McDowell’s No.1 (India’s largest spirits brand), Royal Challenge, Director’s Special, and Johnnie Walker (under license). The company is listed on Indian stock exchanges and majority-owned by global beverages giant Diageo PLC.

Who Owns United Spirits?

United Spirits is majority-owned by Diageo PLC (LSE: DGE), the world’s largest producer of premium spirits, which holds approximately 56% of United Spirits’ shares. Diageo is a UK-listed company headquartered in London whose brands include Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff, Baileys, Guinness, Captain Morgan, and Tanqueray. Diageo acquired its controlling stake in United Spirits between 2013 and 2014, purchasing shares from Vijay Mallya’s United Breweries Group, which had founded United Spirits. The remaining ~44% of USL shares are publicly traded on BSE and NSE, held by institutional investors and retail shareholders.

History and Vijay Mallya

United Spirits traces its commercial origins to the McDowell & Co. Ltd. brand, established in 1826 by Angus McDowell. The modern United Spirits was built by Vijay Mallya and the United Breweries Group (UB Group), which assembled India’s largest spirits portfolio through decades of acquisitions. Mallya sold his controlling stake to Diageo in 2012–2014, using the proceeds partly to fund his struggling Kingfisher Airlines — a decision that preceded his high-profile legal troubles and eventual flight from India on charges of bank loan defaults. Diageo took full operational control of United Spirits by 2015, installing professional management.

Key Brands

United Spirits’ portfolio includes mass-market brands like McDowell’s No.1 Whisky (one of the world’s top-selling whisky brands by volume), Royal Challenge, and Director’s Special, alongside premium and super-premium brands including Johnnie Walker, Black & White, VAT 69, and Antiquity. The company dominates India’s ~600 million case per year spirits market.
