Most people have never heard of Cosmic Circuits — and that’s actually a sign of how deep in the semiconductor supply chain this company operated. Cosmic Circuits was a Bengaluru-based fabless chip design firm that built analog and mixed-signal IP blocks used inside SoCs made by much larger companies. In 2013, Cadence Design Systems acquired them in what was one of the most significant exits for an Indian semiconductor startup. Here’s the ownership story.

Who Owns Cosmic Circuits?

Cosmic Circuits no longer exists as an independent entity. It was acquired by Cadence Design Systems in November 2013. Cadence — one of the world’s leading providers of electronic design automation (EDA) software and semiconductor IP — bought Cosmic Circuits to strengthen its analog and mixed-signal IP portfolio. Cosmic Circuits had built a library of high-performance IP blocks including USB, PCIe, DDR, and MIPI interfaces that chip designers could license and integrate into their custom SoC designs. These were particularly valuable for mobile and automotive chip applications. The Bengaluru team was absorbed into Cadence’s global IP group after the acquisition. Before the acquisition, Cosmic Circuits was a VC-backed Indian startup — investors included Helion Venture Partners and Ventureast among others. Leadership

Cosmic Circuits was founded by a team of experienced semiconductor engineers from Bengaluru’s deep chip-design talent pool. Following the Cadence acquisition, the founding team and key engineers transitioned into roles within Cadence’s global IP group, bringing their mixed-signal design expertise to a much larger platform with worldwide semiconductor customers.

My Take on Cosmic Circuits

The Cosmic Circuits story is exactly the kind of Indian tech win that doesn’t get enough celebration. Here’s a small Bengaluru team that built niche, highly technical analog IP — the kind of invisible-but-essential technology that goes inside every smartphone processor, every automotive chip, every laptop SoC — and got acquired by one of the giants of the semiconductor EDA world. That’s a textbook fabless IP company success story. The fact that most Indians have never heard of them is the point: semiconductor IP is infrastructure, not consumer product. It doesn’t need your brand loyalty. It just needs to work, and Cosmic Circuits clearly made it work well enough for Cadence to write a check.

As of May 2026, Cosmic Circuits continues to operate as an integrated part of Cadence Design Systems’ India operations. The Cadence India team in Bengaluru — which absorbed Cosmic Circuits after the 2013 acquisition — has remained a key R&D hub for the company’s analog and mixed-signal IP business. While the Cosmic Circuits brand name is no longer used publicly, the foundational analog IP work the company pioneered still lives on in Cadence’s Tensilica DSP and IP portfolio.
