Balenciaga faced a severe brand crisis in November 2022 when two advertising campaigns generated massive public backlash — one featuring children with teddy bear handbags in provocative settings, and another that appeared to reference a Supreme Court ruling on child pornography laws. Balenciaga pulled both campaigns and issued apologies, but the fallout was severe. Long-time brand ambassador Kim Kardashian severed ties with the brand. Creative director Demna (Demna Gvasalia) ultimately departed in 2024. The episode raised serious questions about the fashion industry’s content approval processes and brand safety oversight.
