The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the world’s most lucrative Twenty20 cricket tournament, attracting the biggest cricket stars and some of the highest paid cricketers globally. Owned and controlled by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the IPL has become one of the most valuable sports leagues in the world since its first season in 2008, rivaling the NFL, Premier League, and NBA in commercial value.
Who Owns the IPL?
The IPL is owned and operated by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) — the governing body for cricket in India. BCCI controls all IPL broadcasting rights, franchise agreements, sponsorship deals, and governance through a dedicated IPL Governing Council. The BCCI itself is governed by an elected management body comprising state cricket associations across India. The IPL is not publicly listed or privately owned in the traditional sense — it is effectively the commercial property of the BCCI, operating as a league under the board’s umbrella.
Individual Team Ownership
While the IPL as a whole is owned by BCCI, the ten franchises are owned by private business entities and individuals. Mumbai Indians — owned by Reliance Industries (Mukesh Ambani family) — is the most successful team with five IPL titles. Chennai Super Kings is owned by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd (India Cements, N. Srinivasan). Kolkata Knight Riders is co-owned by Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, and Jay Mehta. Royal Challengers Bengaluru is owned by United Spirits/Diageo. Delhi Capitals is co-owned by GMR Group and JSW Sports. Other franchises include Sunrisers Hyderabad (Sun TV Network), Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, and Gujarat Titans.
History and Growth
The IPL was conceptualized by Lalit Modi, then BCCI Vice President, and launched in 2007 with the inaugural season played in 2008. The T20 format, combined with franchise-based team structures modeled on global sports leagues, proved instantly popular. IPL’s media rights deal for 2023–2027 — sold for ₹48,390 crore ($6.2 billion) to Viacom18 (JioCinema, digital) and Star Sports (television) — confirmed the IPL’s status as one of the most valuable sports media properties in the world.
