Red Bull GmbH is the Austrian company behind the world’s most recognizable energy drink brand. It is privately held — owned 49% by the estate of its late Austrian founder Dietrich Mateschitz (who died in October 2022) and 51% by the Thai Yoovidhya family, through their holding company TC Pharmaceutical Industries. Red Bull is not publicly listed and has no outside shareholders.

Who Is the Owner of Red Bull?

Red Bull GmbH is owned by two family interests. The Yoovidhya family of Thailand holds 51% through TC Pharmaceutical Industries, the company founded by the late Chaleo Yoovidhya (died 2012), who developed the original “Krating Daeng” drink in Thailand. His son Chalerm Yoovidhya now leads the family’s interests. The remaining 49% belongs to the estate of Dietrich Mateschitz, the Austrian entrepreneur who encountered Krating Daeng while traveling in Thailand in 1982 and convinced Chaleo to co-found a Western-market version as Red Bull. Mateschitz passed away in October 2022; his son Mark Mateschitz inherited the stake.

Dietrich Mateschitz’s Vision

Mateschitz’s genius was not the product itself (the original Thai Krating Daeng recipe) but the marketing strategy that turned a beverage into a lifestyle brand. Red Bull pioneered event sponsorship-first marketing — investing in extreme sports, Formula 1, cliff diving, air racing, skateboarding, and music — before the concept of “brand content” existed. By the late 2000s, Red Bull was not just an energy drink; it was a media company that happened to sell drinks, owning its own record label, publishing arm, and TV channel.

Sports Empire: Formula 1, Football, and Beyond

Red Bull’s sports ownership portfolio is staggering. In Formula 1, Red Bull Racing (now Oracle Red Bull Racing) has won multiple Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships, with Max Verstappen dominating the sport in 2022–2024. Red Bull also owns RB Leipzig (Bundesliga), Red Bull Salzburg (Austrian Bundesliga), New York Red Bulls (MLS), and Red Bull Bragantino (Brazil). These clubs serve both brand-building and talent-development functions within the Red Bull ecosystem.
