Rocawear is an urban fashion brand co-founded by Jay-Z (Shawn Carter) and Damon Dash in 1999 that grew into a multi-hundred-million-dollar streetwear empire — before Jay-Z sold the brand to Authentic Brands Group (ABG) in 2007 for approximately $204 million. ABG, a brand management and licensing company, has owned Rocawear ever since.

Who Is the Owner of Rocawear?

Rocawear is owned by Authentic Brands Group (ABG), a New York-based brand management company that licenses the Rocawear name and IP to apparel manufacturers and retailers. ABG purchased Rocawear from Jay-Z’s company in 2007 for approximately $204 million — one of the largest brand sales in hip-hop fashion history at the time. Jay-Z had previously bought out co-founder Damon Dash’s stake in 2004 following their falling out, acquiring full control of the brand before the ABG sale. ABG itself is a private company backed by private equity investors including Leonard Green & Partners, General Atlantic, and BlackRock.

Rocawear’s Golden Era

Rocawear launched in 1999 during the peak of hip-hop’s fashion crossover into mainstream American culture. Founded by Jay-Z and Damon Dash as an extension of the Roc-A-Fella Records brand, Rocawear became one of the defining urban fashion labels of the 2000s — competing with FUBU, Sean John (Puff Daddy), Ecko, and Karl Kani. At its peak, Rocawear generated approximately $700 million in annual retail sales. The brand was known for oversized hoodies, denim, T-shirts, and accessories emblazoned with its iconic shield logo.

Authentic Brands Group: The Brand Acquirer

ABG has become one of the world’s largest brand licensing companies, assembling a portfolio of 50+ consumer brands including Reebok, Barneys New York, Sports Illustrated, Forever 21, JCPenney, the estate of Marilyn Monroe, and Elvis Presley Enterprises. Rather than operating stores or making products directly, ABG licenses its brands to manufacturers, retailers, and media companies — collecting royalties without the overhead of inventory and retail. This capital-light model has been highly profitable. ABG was valued at approximately $12.7 billion in 2022.
