Who Owns Kingfisher Beer?
Kingfisher Beer is a brand of United Breweries Limited (UBL), which is listed on the BSE and NSE in India. UBL is majority-owned by Heineken International, the Dutch brewing giant, which holds approximately 61% of United Breweries. Heineken gradually increased its stake in UBL after first investing in the early 2000s. Vijay Mallya’s UB Group — which originally built UBL and the Kingfisher brand — sold down its stake following Mallya’s financial troubles and legal issues. Heineken (which owns Heineken, Amstel, Tecate, and Dos Equis globally) now exercises full operational and strategic control of UBL and the Kingfisher brand.
History and Vijay Mallya
The United Breweries Group was founded in 1857 in Bangalore. Vijay Mallya inherited control of the UB Group from his father in the 1980s and transformed it into a lifestyle empire, turning Kingfisher beer into a national symbol through aggressive cricket sponsorships and the creation of Kingfisher Airlines (which collapsed in 2012). Mallya sold his UBL shares as part of settling debts from the airline’s collapse. After years of legal battles over alleged bank loan defaults, Mallya lost his Indian shareholdings in UBL, cementing Heineken’s majority control.
Kingfisher Portfolio
The Kingfisher portfolio includes Kingfisher Premium Lager, Kingfisher Strong (the higher-alcohol variant popular in India’s value beer segment), Kingfisher Ultra (premium craft-style), and Kingfisher Ultra Max. Kingfisher Strong competes in the rapidly growing “strong beer” segment in India. UBL also produces and distributes Heineken’s international brands in India, including Heineken and Amstel.
