Satish Kumar Kaura is an Indian advocate of technocracy, an industrialist, and the founder of Samtel Group, where he holds the post of chairman. He is also the chairman and managing director of Samcor Glass Limited and the executive director of Samtel Colour Limited. An elected Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), Kaura is the first recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He was awarded the fourth highest civilian honor of the Padma Shri, in 2004 by the Government of India, for his contributions to the Indian industrial sector.

S. K. Kaura was born to a middle-class family on 18 December 1944. However, with his intelligence, he joined the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He graduated in electrical engineering (BTech) in 1966. Later, he moved to Canada and secured a master’s degree (MS) in electronics from Carleton University.

Returning to India, he founded Samtel Group in 1973. Later, a small industry manufacturing television picture tubes, Teletube Electronics Limited, was established in 1974. Eventually, two more organizations, Samtel India Limited in 1981 and an engineering firm, Samtel Engineering and Sourcing Solutions, in 1983.

In 1986,  Samtel Color Limited was established, with technical and commercial collaborations with conglomerates like Sumitomo Corporation and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and the company had an installed capacity of 10 million picture tubes per annum. He also set up Samtel Display Systems. Later renamed Samtel Avionics Ltd for manufacturing of high-technology products.

Samtel Thales Avionics is a Joint Venture between Samtel Avionics and Thales. Samtel Thales Avionics brings Thales’s technological expertise to India. Forthwith Thales’s strategy of partnering with leading industry players around the world, The JV develops, customizes, manufactures, sells, and maintains Helmet Mounted Sight & Display (HMSD), Optronics, and other Avionics systems for the Indian market. Also, it is the partner to Indian customers delivering avionics programs from design to integrated lifetime support. It is headquartered in Delhi, India.

2026 Update: From CRT Pioneer to Defence Avionics

Samtel exited CRT/picture-tube manufacturing years ago as the technology went obsolete, and today the group operates almost entirely in defence and avionics. Samtel HAL Display Systems — a joint venture with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited — remains active, producing multi-function displays for platforms including the Su-30 MKI, and the group also runs Samtel Thales Avionics, a joint venture with French defence giant Thales, out of Delhi. Samtel is also exploring indigenous railway display solutions for Indian Railways and export markets.
