Who Owns Premier Ltd?
Premier Ltd is controlled by the Walchand Group / Chowgule family — one of India’s oldest industrial families, with ~42% promoter stake. The company pivoted from passenger cars (discontinued by 2001) to construction equipment and ambulance manufacturing after deregulation made its Padmini model uncompetitive.
History of Premier Ltd
Premier Automobiles Ltd (PAL) was founded in 1944 in Mumbai, assembling Chrysler vehicles initially. It partnered with Fiat in the 1950s to produce the Premier Padmini — India’s version of the Fiat 1100/1300 — which became a taxi staple in Mumbai for decades. After liberalisation in 1991, Premier could not compete with Maruti Suzuki’s scale. Passenger car production ended by 2001. Premier rebranded to Premier Ltd and pivoted to construction equipment and defence/ambulance vehicles.
