Videocon Telecom was wholly owned by the Videocon Group, controlled by the Dhoot family — primarily Venugopal Dhoot and his brothers. The Videocon Group was an Aurangabad-based Indian conglomerate that built its wealth in consumer electronics (TVs, washing machines, ACs) before diversifying into oil & gas, DTH (Videocon d2h), and telecom. Videocon Telecom was a wholly-owned subsidiary of the group, not listed separately. The Dhoot family held the controlling promoter stake in Videocon Industries, the parent company that funded Videocon Telecom’s licence acquisition and network rollout. My Take on Videocon Telecom

Videocon Telecom is a case study in conglomerate diversification gone wrong. The Dhoot family built a genuinely successful electronics company and then tried to use that cash flow and credibility to enter every adjacent market — oil, DTH, and telecom — simultaneously. Telecom particularly required scale and sustained capital investment that a conglomerate without a core telecom competency could not match. The 2012 licence cancellation probably accelerated an exit that market forces would have forced eventually anyway. The bigger tragedy was the total destruction of the parent Videocon Group, which took down thousands of supplier jobs and left banks holding massive losses.
