Xolo holds a unique place in Indian smartphone history — it launched the world’s first Intel Atom-powered smartphone. That’s not a small claim. Yet today, most people can’t even remember what Xolo was, let alone who owns it. The answer: Xolo was always a sub-brand of Lava International, and it quietly faded away when Lava consolidated its product strategy. Here’s the full story.

Who Owns Xolo?

Xolo is — and always was — a brand of Lava International Limited, the Indian smartphone and feature phone company based in Noida. Lava was founded by four partners: Hari Om Rai, S.N. Rai, Shailendra Nath Rai, and Vishal Sehgal. When Lava partnered with Intel in 2012 to launch the world’s first Intel Atom smartphone (the Xolo X900), they created the Xolo brand to give that product a distinct identity separate from Lava’s more mass-market lineup. Over the next few years, Xolo expanded into a full sub-brand with its own series of Android phones targeting the mid-range segment. By 2016–2017, as Chinese brands made mid-range differentiation nearly impossible for Indian OEMs, Lava pulled back and quietly sunset the Xolo brand. Today, Lava continues to operate with a focus on feature phones and the domestic ‘Made in India’ manufacturing push. For more on Lava’s ownership, see who owns Lava International. Leadership

Xolo was operated as an internal brand within Lava International and never had a separate leadership team. Lava’s four co-founders — Hari Om Rai (Chairman), S.N. Rai, Shailendra Nath Rai, and Vishal Sehgal — collectively governed both the Lava and Xolo brands. Post-discontinuation, Hari Om Rai has been the most visible spokesperson for Lava’s ongoing manufacturing and ‘Vocal for Local’ push.

My Take on Xolo

The Xolo X900 is one of those historical footnotes that deserves more recognition. Lava and Intel together put the world’s first Atom smartphone in Indian consumers’ hands in April 2012 — beating every other market. That took genuine engineering coordination and commercial courage. The tragedy is that Intel’s smartphone Atom chips never quite delivered the thermal and battery performance the platform needed, and the Xolo brand ended up migrating to MediaTek anyway. Once Xolo was just another Android phone brand with no unique hardware story, there was nothing to distinguish it. Lava made the right call folding it rather than diluting both brands. One X900 will always be a piece of history though.
