If you had a mobile SIM card from Telenor India — marketed under the “Uninor” brand — between 2009 and 2017, you were a customer of a Norwegian state-backed telecom company trying to crack the Indian market. Telenor’s India story is one of massive investment, legal setbacks, and ultimately a strategic exit. Here’s who owns Telenor and what happened to its India operations.

Who Owns Telenor?
Telenor ASA is a Norwegian multinational telecommunications company, majority-owned by the Norwegian Government, which holds approximately 53.97% through the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries. Telenor is listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange. The company entered India in 2009 through a joint venture with Unitech Group (Unitech Wireless), launching mobile services under the Uninor brand. However, the 2G spectrum allocation scandal in India hit Telenor India badly — the Supreme Court cancelled 122 licences in 2012, including Telenor’s. After a period of re-licensing and re-entry, Telenor India continued operating until 2017, when it sold its India mobile operations to Bharti Airtel, effectively exiting the Indian market. Telenor continues to operate in multiple Asian markets (Bangladesh, Pakistan, Malaysia, Thailand) and its Nordic home market. For the Airtel connection, see who owns Bharti Airtel. Telenor’s global operations are at telenor.com.

My Take on Telenor India
Telenor’s India experience was a casualty of the 2G spectrum scam — they were caught in the middle of a political and regulatory storm that had nothing to do with their business execution. Uninor actually had decent subscriber numbers in its operating circles. But losing licences, fighting legal battles, paying for re-bidding, and operating under regulatory uncertainty for five years is simply too expensive. The exit to Airtel was the right call. What’s interesting is that Telenor learned enough from India to avoid similar regulatory exposure in its other Asian markets. Sometimes the most valuable experience comes from the markets that don’t work out.
